Stopping the water: Try under the kitchen sink first, then under the boards inside the front door, then the cellar. In a converted house or mansion block, check the hall cupboard or the shared riser, and remember one stopcock may serve several flats. Stay away from wet electrics.
Inner north: Georgian and Victorian terraces
In Islington, Camden and Hampstead much of the housing is Georgian or early Victorian, and a lot of it is now flats. Shared soil stacks, cellar kitchens below drain level and basement conversions with pumped waste are everyday problems here. Thames Water says homes built before 1970 may still have lead on the supply pipe, which in these streets covers almost everything.
The middle ring: Edwardian streets and conversions
Muswell Hill, Crouch End, Hornsey and Wood Green are mostly Edwardian terraces and semis, and many have been split into two or three flats. The classic call is water through the ceiling from the flat above, or a shared stopcock that turns off the whole house.
Further out: interwar suburbs
Finchley, Barnet, Southgate and Enfield are largely 1930s semis and detached houses with loft tanks, airing-cupboard cylinders and long gardens. Hot water running short, a tank overflowing in the loft and outside taps freezing in January are the usual calls. Which parts of north London do you cover?
All of it, from Islington, Camden and Hampstead in the inner boroughs out to Finchley, Barnet, Southgate, Enfield and Tottenham, and across to Muswell Hill, Crouch End and Highgate. Our base is in Wood Green, N22, in the middle of the area.
My stopcock is seized solid. What can I do?
Do not force it with a wrench, as an old valve can snap and make things worse. Use the outside stop valve instead, normally under a small cover in the pavement or front path near your boundary, which needs a long key. If you cannot find or turn either, call us, catch what water you can, and keep it away from electrics until we arrive.
My converted flat shares a stopcock with the others in the house. Is that normal?
In north London conversions it is common, especially in houses split into flats decades ago. It means a leak in one flat can only be stopped by turning off the water for everyone, so it is worth knowing where the valve is and who can reach it. Fitting a separate valve for each flat is a straightforward job once the emergency is over.
