A village that filled up late
Winchmore Hill was a small hamlet in the parish of Edmonton for centuries. Weatherboarded cottages and a few elegant houses stood round the green by 1801, and the railway arrived in 1871. Even then, the big estates around the village stayed in private hands, so building stalled for two decades. When they were sold in the early 1900s the area grew fast, and by 1935 it was almost entirely built up.

Drains under the gardens
Most of the roads east of the railway were drained in the 1900s to 1930s in clay pipe. We live in one of the old cottages near The Green. Is the plumbing likely to be original?
Rarely all of it, but the parts you cannot see often are. Cottages and houses round The Green and up Wades Hill and Church Hill have been replumbed in stages over two centuries, so it is common to find modern copper upstairs joined to older pipe under the floor, and an old drain run out the back. We trace what is there before we cut anything.
Our Broad Walk house has three bathrooms and the top one runs out of hot water first. Why?
Usually the cylinder or the pipe sizes were not planned for that many outlets at once. A large unvented cylinder, a pump on the hot side or rebalancing the pipework are the usual answers; we look at what you have and tell you which one fits before any work starts.
The conservation area rules worry us. Can you still fix an outside pipe?
Yes. Repairing or replacing a leaking pipe like for like is a repair. If you want to move or add pipework on the front of a house in the conservation area, check with Enfield Council first; we can tell you exactly what would change so you can ask.
