Are they allowed with a macerator or septic tank?
With macerators, no. With septic systems, only specific models and it changes your emptying schedule, we'll tell you honestly if your setup shouldn't have one.
What does fitting cost?

Will it block my drain?
Not if it is used as intended with plenty of cold water running. What blocks drains is fat, and a disposal unit does not deal with fat any better than a plughole does. In an older London property on original clay drainage we will tell you honestly if we think it is a bad idea.
Continuous feed or batch feed?
Continuous feed is more convenient and much more common. Batch feed needs the stopper in place to run, which makes it the safer choice in a house with young children. Both fit the same waste arrangement.
It hums but does not turn, is it dead?
Usually not. That is a jam, and most units have a hex key socket underneath to free the plate, plus a reset button. If it trips again immediately after freeing it, then it is the motor and it is worth replacing rather than repairing.
