Every trade website shows five stars. That tells you almost nothing, because the selection is done by the company. Here is how to get something useful out of reviews, including ours.

Read the four-star ones first

Five-star reviews tell you a job went normally. Four-star reviews tell you what happened when something went slightly wrong, a late arrival, a part that had to be ordered, a return visit, and how the firm behaved about it. That is the thing you actually need to predict, because your job may well be the one that goes sideways.

Check the platform, not the quote

A testimonial on a company website has been chosen by that company. Checkatrade, Trustpilot and Google reviews are harder to curate and are attached to a verifiable job or account. Where we quote a score, the platform is named so you can go and read the whole set rather than our selection of it.

Volume and recency both matter

Forty reviews across five years says less than forty across the last twelve months, because a business changes. A cluster of glowing reviews in one short window, all similarly phrased, is the pattern of a purchased batch. Look at the distribution over time rather than the average.

What we ask customers to mention

Whether the price they were quoted is the price they paid. Whether the arrival time was accurate. Whether the engineer explained what had failed. Those three cover almost everything that matters in an emergency callout, and they are specific enough to be hard to fake.

We would genuinely rather fix it, a complaint resolved is cheaper than a review that stands for five years, and that is as good a reason to trust the offer as any principled one.
