Macerators are everywhere in London because basement conversions and loft en-suites are everywhere, and gravity drainage frequently is not available. Hard water is unkind to them: scale builds on the blades and inside the discharge pipe, narrowing it until the unit strains and the motor eventually burns out. Descaling on a sensible interval is the difference between fifteen years and fifteen months. Where gravity drainage is genuinely feasible we say so, because a macerator you do not need is a maintenance commitment you did not want.

My Saniflo hums but doesn't pump
Classic jammed blade or failed membrane, a repair visit, not a replacement. Stop using it (the motor burns out if it runs dry) and call.
Can I put a full bathroom on one?
Yes, the larger units handle WC, basin and shower together if pipe runs and lift height are within spec. The survey does that arithmetic before anything is bought.
Why does mine smell?
Usually a venting or descale issue, occasionally a membrane. In hard-water London a yearly descale keeps them sweet, five minutes with the right fluid.
Are macerators as unreliable as people say?
Correctly sized, correctly installed and used sensibly, they run for years. The failures we attend nearly always trace to one of three things: an undersized unit, a pump-up run that exceeds the head the unit is rated for, or wipes. None of those is the machine's fault.
What can I not put down one?
Wipes of any kind including the ones marked flushable, sanitary products, cotton buds and kitchen fat. A macerator handles paper and waste. Anything fibrous wraps the blade and stops it.
How far can it pump?
Typically up to 4 metres vertically or around 50 metres horizontally, and the two trade against each other, every metre of rise costs you several metres of run. We measure the actual route before specifying, because a unit asked to exceed its curve will simply stall.
