Semis that have grown
Much of Hendon was built in the 1920s and 1930s, after the tube reached Hendon Central in 1923. Since then many of those houses have been extended at the back and into the roof, and each extension added bathrooms to drains and supply pipes sized for a smaller house. Old drains on clay

Since our loft conversion the bathroom drains slowly. Why?
A new bathroom at the top of the house often joins the old soil stack with a long branch and not much fall, and that is where hair and soap build up. Sometimes the connection to the stack was made too small. Clearing the branch usually fixes it; if it keeps happening, the pipe run needs changing.
Tree roots have got into our drain. Is that our problem or the council's?
If the roots are in the drain serving only your house, the drain is yours, whatever tree they came from. If they are in a drain or sewer shared with neighbours, Thames Water says the shared section is its responsibility. A camera survey shows which part is affected.
Where is the outside stop valve on a Hendon house?
Usually under a small square cover in the pavement or front path near your boundary. It needs a long stop-tap key to turn, and it shuts off the supply to the whole house.
