First steps: In a semi, close the stopcock under the kitchen sink or the stairs. In a tower flat, look in the utility or hall cupboard, often next to the heat interface unit; the riser valves are outside the flat. Switch off power near any water if it is safe. Gas smell: ring 0800 111 999 first.

Two Wemblys

Within a mile of each other, Wembley has two completely different kinds of home. Around Sudbury, Preston Road and Alperton it is 1930s semis, many with the original loft tank and copper cylinder. The semis

The towers
