A pipe has frozen in my Barnet loft. How do I thaw it safely?
Turn off the stopcock first, in case the pipe has already split. Open the tap it feeds, then warm the pipe gently with a hairdryer or hot water bottle, working from the tap end back towards the frozen section. Never use a naked flame. If you find a split, keep the water off and call us.
The pipe to our outbuilding has burst. Can we keep the house running?
Often yes. If the outbuilding supply has its own isolating valve, turn that off and the house can stay on. If it does not, you will need to turn off the main stopcock until the burst is repaired, and fitting a separate valve then is worth doing.
Do old houses in Hadley and High Barnet have lead pipes?
