Questions people ask
There is water coming from a pipe on the outside wall near our hot water cylinder. Should I worry?
On a pressurised (unvented) cylinder, water from that pipe, or into the small funnel called a tundish beside the cylinder, means a safety valve is releasing water. Usually the pressure or temperature is too high or a valve has failed. It should be checked soon by someone qualified to work on unvented cylinders.
Our water meter keeps turning with every tap off. What should we do?
Water is escaping somewhere, often on the supply pipe under the drive or garden. That pipe is the owner's to repair from the boundary inwards. Look for damp patches, sinking paving or a hissing at the outside valve, and call us to trace it.
The pipe to our garage froze and split. Can we keep using the house?
If the garage has its own isolating valve, turn that off and the house can stay on. If not, turn off the main stopcock until we arrive, and consider a separate valve for the garage afterwards.
