How long does a gas safety check take?
Around 30 to 45 minutes for a single boiler, plus roughly fifteen minutes per additional appliance. The certificate is issued digitally the same day rather than posted the following week.
What are the penalties for not having one?
Unlimited fines and up to six months' imprisonment under the Gas Safety Regulations, and in England a missing record also invalidates a Section 21 notice. Insurers have declined claims on properties without a current certificate. It is not treated as a paperwork offence.
Is a safety check the same as a service?
No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in domestic gas. A certificate confirms the appliance is safe today. A service cleans and checks it, and is what the manufacturer warranty requires. Booking both together costs less than buying them separately.
Can I check the engineer is genuine?
Please do. Every engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card with a licence number and the appliance categories they hold. Check it at gassaferegister.co.uk and match the categories to what is in the property. We expect to be asked.
