Boiler Service Cost & Choosing a Plumber

What things should cost, and how to pick a firm that won't make it worse.

What a boiler service should cost

Between £70 and £120 across the UK for a standard domestic gas boiler, with London at the upper end and Greater Manchester nearer the lower. Ours is £89, fixed. If someone quotes £45, ask what is included, a genuine service requires a calibrated flue gas analyser and takes the better part of an hour, and neither of those is free to the firm doing it.

A service and a safety certificate are not the same thing

This is the most expensive misunderstanding in domestic plumbing. A CP12 safety check confirms the appliance is safe right now. A service cleans the burner and heat exchanger, checks seals and combustion, and is what actually extends the boiler's life and keeps the manufacturer warranty valid. Many people pay for the certificate believing they bought the service, and find out when a warranty claim is refused.

What legitimately changes a price, and what should not

Access, parts and time legitimately change it. A pipe under a solid floor genuinely costs more than one under a sink. What should not change it is the hour of the day: a firm charging a night premium is making a pricing choice, not covering a cost. And a price that moves after work has started, without a new decision from you, is the mechanic behind almost every horror story.

The four questions that protect you

Is there a call-out fee? Is that price fixed or an estimate? Does it include parts? Will I have it in writing before work starts? A reputable firm answers all four without hesitating, on the phone, before sending anyone. If the answer to the last one is no, keep dialling, that single question filters out most of the bad outcomes.

Check the register, not the logo

Anyone can put a Gas Safe logo on a van. The register at gassaferegister.co.uk takes thirty seconds and shows the individual engineer's licence and the specific appliance categories they hold. Match the card they carry on the doorstep to the register entry. A professional expects you to ask and is not remotely offended by it.

Common questions
How much is a boiler service?
Typically £70 to £120 in the UK; ours is £89 fixed. It should take 30 to 45 minutes, include a combustion analysis with a calibrated analyser, and end with readings recorded in your benchmark book. If none of that happened, you did not have a service.
Is a boiler service worth it?
Financially, yes, for one reason above all others: almost every manufacturer requires an annual service for the warranty to remain valid, and a missed year is the most common reason a claim is refused. A free heat exchanger is worth considerably more than the service that protected it.
How much does an emergency plumber cost?
Expect £75 to £150 call-out plus £40 to £80 an hour across the UK. Ours is simpler: £110 first hour, £45 per additional half hour, no call-out fee, same price at any hour of any day. See our full published rate card rather than taking that on trust.
How do I know if a plumber is overcharging?
You largely cannot, after the fact, which is why the protection has to come before. Get the figure in writing before work starts and compare it with published rates. A firm that will not put a number in writing before opening the toolbox has told you something important about how it prices.
