Eco-Friendly Plumbing That Lowers Your Water Bill
The changes that genuinely cut water and heating costs, ranked by payback.
Free and immediate
Fix dripping taps (up to 90 litres a week each), run the washing machine full, and drop your cylinder stat to 60°C. A leaking toilet flapper can silently pass 200 litres a day; the food-dye-in-the-cistern test finds it in ten minutes.
Cheap with fast payback
Aerated tap inserts and an eco shower head cut hot water use by around a third without feeling worse, and on a water meter they pay for themselves inside months. Cylinder and pipe insulation is the least glamorous, highest-return purchase in plumbing.
Bigger moves
Dual-flush conversions, pressure reduction if your mains runs high, and choosing an efficient boiler at replacement time. We will tell you honestly which of these your house will notice and which are brochure decoration.
The measures that actually pay back
A cylinder jacket and pipe insulation on the first metre from the cylinder pay back within a year. Thermostatic radiator valves and correct system balancing come next. A water-efficient shower head saves both water and the energy to heat it. These are dull, cheap and reliably effective, unlike most of what is marketed as eco-plumbing.
Metered water: where it actually goes
Toilets and showers dominate household use, followed by garden watering in summer. A running toilet can waste several hundred litres a day and is the single largest avoidable line on most metered bills. Fixing a dripping tap and a running toilet does more than any water-saving gadget on sale.
Heat pumps and low-temperature heating
A heat pump is efficient at low flow temperatures, which means the emitters have to be sized for it, usually larger radiators or underfloor heating. Fitting one to an existing system sized for 70°C flow is the most common reason people find them disappointing. If a heat pump is in your ten-year plan, oversizing radiators now costs very little.
