Low Pressure in the Shower: Causes by System Type
Gravity, combi or unvented, the fix is completely different depending on what you have.
Diagnose by system type first. On a gravity-fed system, low pressure is normal physics - about 0.1 bar per metre of drop from the loft tank - and a pump is the fix. On a mains or combi system, low pressure means a restriction: a scaled shower head, a partly closed valve, or a failed thermostatic cartridge.

Know your system first
A cold tank in the loft and a hot cylinder = gravity: your pressure is set by the height of that tank, and no shower head will change physics. A combi boiler = mains pressure: the boiler's flow rate is the ceiling. A sealed cylinder = unvented: mains pressure throughout, so a weak shower means a fault, not a design limit.
Cheap wins in order
Descale the shower head (overnight in vinegar). Check the isolation valve behind the shower is fully open, half-closed valves after past work are absurdly common. Clean the inlet filter on mixer showers. Only then think about pumps or boiler upgrades.
The right big fix per system
Gravity: a twin impeller pump or a move to unvented. Combi: check the boiler's flow rate against the shower's demand before blaming pipework. Unvented: a pressure-reducing valve set wrong or a failing expansion vessel, both engineer jobs, both quick.
Pressure and flow are not the same thing
Pressure is force, flow is volume, and a shower needs both. A gravity-fed system has plenty of flow but little pressure, which is why a mixer designed for mains supplies disappoints on it. Establishing which of the two you are short of decides whether the answer is a pump, a different valve, or a clean.
The cheap causes, checked first
A scaled shower head, soak it in descaler overnight. A partly closed isolation valve on the supply, often left that way after other work. A blocked filter in the shower valve inlet. In hard-water London these three account for most complaints, and all are free or nearly so to resolve.
When a pump is and is not the answer
A pump can transform a gravity-fed shower. It cannot legally be fitted to a mains-fed supply, and it will not help a scaled cartridge. If your cold runs strongly and the hot does not, you have a gravity hot supply and a pump is the right conversation. If both are weak, the problem is the incoming main.
Gravity, mains or unvented, the answer changes everything
A gravity system fed from a loft tank delivers roughly 0.1 bar for every metre of height between the tank and the shower head. A first-floor shower under a loft tank might have two metres of drop, which is 0.2 bar, and that is genuinely weak no matter what fittings are installed. A combi or unvented system runs at mains pressure, typically 2 to 4 bar. So the same complaint has completely different causes: on gravity it is physics, and on mains it is an obstruction.
If you are on gravity
A shower pump is the correct answer and the standard solution, typically a 1.5 to 2.0 bar twin pump for a shower drawing hot and cold. Raising the tank is occasionally possible and rarely practical. What will not work is fitting a mains-pressure shower valve, because there is no mains pressure to give it. Note that pumping is not permitted on a direct mains supply under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, so a pump belongs on a gravity system and nowhere else.
If you are on mains pressure
Work through the restrictions in order. Descale the shower head, in London, at 280 to 320 ppm, this alone restores most of the lost flow and it is free. Check the isolating valve on the supply, which is often left part-closed after other work. Check the thermostatic cartridge, which scales up internally and is a serviceable part. And check whether the problem is only when another outlet runs, which points at supply pipework that is undersized for the number of fittings.
Flow rate versus pressure
These get confused constantly and they are not the same thing. Pressure is force, measured in bar. Flow rate is volume over time, measured in litres per minute, and it is what actually determines whether a shower feels good. A mains supply can have healthy pressure but poor flow if the incoming service pipe is old, narrow or partly scaled, common in pre-1970 properties with a 15mm or lead supply. Measuring flow with a bucket and a stopwatch takes a minute and tells you more than any pressure gauge: under 8 litres a minute will disappoint regardless of what is fitted.
